Caritas Indonesia Launches Recovery Program After Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Eruption

LARANTUKA, Caritas Indonesia together with Caritas Larantuka and Caritas Maumere launched the Continued Recovery Program (Rehab-Recon) After the Eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki at UNIO Patris Corde, Larantuka Diocese, Larantuka, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, January 28, 2025. This program is a continuation of the emergency response response of the Caritas Indonesia network which was carried out previously in 2024.

Director of Caritas Indonesia, Father Fredy Rante Taruk conveyed Caritas Indonesia’s future activities, namely:  

  1. Assisted in the repair of 375 housing units for the first four months. 
  2. Helping household appliances for 600 families.
  3. Providing food support to 1,154 families over the next three months. The strategy used will drive the local economy.
  4. Improvement and strengthening of clean water sources at four points.
  5. Providing health services to support the health of people affected by disasters.
  6. Restoring livelihoods after four months for 892 families.
  7. Strengthening the community and reducing the risk of disasters in 11 villages. This plan will be carried out in collaboration with BNPB, BPBD, and local partners to build community resilience in the face of disasters.
  8. Running the Disaster Safe Education Unit (SPAB) program in eight schools.
  9. Assistance and capacity building for Caritas Larantuka and Caritas Maumere. In line with this effort, the strengthening of disaster volunteers will be considered and target other dioceses on the island of Flores.

Father Fredy ensured that the plan that will be carried out by Caritas Indonesia will not take on the role of the government. Caritas Indonesia actively communicates with BNPB and the local government to ensure role taking. Assessments have been carried out, including by visiting stakeholders and beneficiaries. This program is planned to be run by Caritas Indonesia for 12 months.
